Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system
The Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system in the Subaru Ascent is an advanced
safety feature developed to help minimize the risk of collisions when reversing.
By continuously monitoring the area behind the vehicle, the Subaru Ascent can detect
obstacles such as walls or stationary objects and alert the driver through audible
warnings. In situations where the risk of impact increases, the system may automatically
apply braking force to help prevent a collision or reduce potential damage.
WARNING
- The Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system in the Subaru Ascent is intended
as a support feature and does not replace the driver’s responsibility to remain
aware of surroundings at all times.
- The driver must always operate the Subaru Ascent safely. Before reversing,
firmly press the brake pedal and visually confirm that the surrounding area
is clear.
- Due to inherent system limitations, there may be situations where the
Subaru Ascent cannot avoid a collision. Warnings or automatic braking may occur
with delay or may not activate even if an obstacle is present.
- Always switch the Automatic Braking function OFF when the Subaru Ascent
is placed on a dynamometer or free roller device, as unintended vehicle movement
may occur.
- Disable the RAB system when towing a trailer with the Subaru Ascent to
prevent unexpected system activation.
- This system is not designed to reliably detect pedestrians, children,
animals, or fast-moving objects.
- The effectiveness of the sonar sensors in the Subaru Ascent may vary
depending on weather, dirt, or surrounding environmental conditions.
- If accessories such as a trailer hitch, bike rack, or bumper guard are
installed on the rear of the Subaru Ascent, the RAB system must be turned off
to avoid false detections and possible system malfunction.
NOTE
The Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB) system in the Subaru Ascent records specific
operational data when automatic braking is triggered.
This system does not capture audio, conversations, or personal data of any
kind.
- Distance to the detected object
- Vehicle speed at the time of detection
- Accelerator pedal input status
- Brake pedal input status
- Select lever position
- Ambient outside temperature
- Configured sensitivity level of the sonar sensors
Subaru and authorized third parties may use this anonymized data collected from
the Subaru Ascent for research, development, and system improvement purposes.
This data will not be disclosed to other parties unless one of the following
conditions is met.
- The vehicle owner has explicitly provided consent.
- Disclosure is required by law, court order, or other legally binding request.
- The data has been anonymized and is used for statistical or research purposes
where identification is not possible.
