The Subaru Ascent select lever includes the standard positions "P", "R", "N", and "D", along with an additional "M" position that enables manual gear selection for enhanced driving control.

NOTE

P (Park)

This position is used when parking the Subaru Ascent or starting the engine. In "P", the transmission is mechanically locked, preventing the vehicle from moving.

When parking the Subaru Ascent, always apply the parking brake first, then shift into "P". Relying solely on the transmission lock may place unnecessary strain on the drivetrain.

To shift out of "P", fully depress the brake pedal before moving the lever. This prevents unintended vehicle movement when starting.

R (Reverse)

The "R" position is used for backing up the Subaru Ascent. Always bring the vehicle to a complete stop before selecting reverse.

To shift from "N" to "R", press the select lever button and move the lever accordingly. When the ignition is in the "ACC" position, the brake pedal must be depressed to allow shifting into reverse.

N (Neutral)

The "N" position disconnects the transmission from the drivetrain, allowing the Subaru Ascent to roll freely.

This position is typically used for restarting a stalled engine. However, avoid coasting in neutral, as engine braking is not available and vehicle control may be reduced.

WARNING

Never drive the Subaru Ascent with the select lever in the "N" position.

Without engine braking, stopping distances increase and the risk of losing control is significantly higher.

D (Drive)

The "D" position is used for normal driving conditions. The Subaru Ascent CVT continuously adjusts gear ratios to match speed and acceleration demands, providing smooth and efficient performance.

When driving uphill or downhill, the system automatically adapts to maintain stability and appropriate engine braking.

For stronger acceleration, press the accelerator pedal fully. The Subaru Ascent transmission will simulate a downshift, similar to a conventional automatic transmission.

Once the accelerator is released, the system returns to its normal operating ratio for efficient cruising.

If you use the steering wheel shift paddles while in "D", the Subaru Ascent will temporarily switch to manual mode, allowing you to select gear ratios manually.

After conditions stabilize, the transmission automatically returns to standard "D" mode for normal operation.

The Subaru Ascent CVT system is engineered to balance performance, fuel efficiency, and driving comfort, delivering a refined experience across a wide range of driving conditions.
