The continuously variable transmission (CVT) in the Subaru Ascent is an advanced electronically managed system designed to deliver seamless acceleration, optimal efficiency, and smooth driving dynamics. Unlike traditional gearboxes, it offers an infinite range of forward gear ratios along with one reverse gear, and also includes a manual mode for greater driver control when needed.
NOTE
Once the engine warms up, the transmission automatically returns to its normal shift pattern.
As you continue driving, the system will relearn your driving patterns and restore smooth, optimized shifting performance.
This is a protective function designed to maintain proper engine cooling. Normal performance will resume once load conditions decrease. During such driving, always proceed cautiously and avoid overtaking on uphill sections.
In certain situations, you may hear a characteristic chain noise, which is a normal trait of this transmission design and does not indicate a malfunction.
