WARNING

In cold or freezing conditions, avoid using the windshield washer system of the Subaru Ascent until the windshield has been properly warmed by the defroster.

If washer fluid is sprayed onto a cold surface, it may freeze instantly, reducing visibility and creating a hazardous driving situation.

CAUTION

• Do not operate the washer system of the Subaru Ascent continuously for more than 10 seconds or when the washer reservoir is empty. Prolonged operation under such conditions may lead to overheating and potential damage to the washer motor.

  It is recommended to regularly check the washer fluid level, especially during refueling stops.

• Never activate the wipers on a dry windshield or rear window. This can scratch the glass surface, wear out the blade rubber, and put unnecessary strain on the wiper motor. Always use washer fluid before engaging the wipers on a dry surface in the Subaru Ascent.
• During freezing weather, ensure that the wiper blades are not stuck to the windshield or rear window before activating them.

  Operating the wipers while frozen may damage both the blade rubber and the wiper motor. If freezing occurs, use the defroster, windshield wiper deicer (if equipped), or rear window defogger to release the blades safely.

• If the wipers in the Subaru Ascent stop during operation due to ice or debris on the glass, this may overload the motor even if the switch is turned off. In such cases, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe location, turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK"/"OFF" position, and clear any obstruction from the glass surface.

  If washer fluid is unavailable, clean water may be used. However, in regions with freezing temperatures, always use Subaru-approved windshield washer fluid or an equivalent solution.

• Do not clean the wiper blade rubber using gasoline, benzine, or strong solvents such as paint thinner. These substances can degrade the rubber material and reduce wiping performance.

For models with automatic rain sensing windshield wipers:

• When the Subaru Ascent wiper switch is set to the "AUTO" position, avoid touching the windshield near the rain sensor or placing wet objects in that area. This may trigger unintended wiper operation, which could lead to injury or distraction.
• When washing the Subaru Ascent, always ensure that the wiper system is switched off.

  Failure to do so may result in unexpected wiper movement, potentially causing injury.

• Before entering an automatic car wash, confirm that the wipers are turned off. Unexpected operation may cause damage to the wiper arms or allow them to become entangled with car wash brushes.

NOTE

• The windshield wiper motor in the Subaru Ascent is equipped with an overload protection circuit breaker. If excessive load is detected, the system may temporarily stop the motor to prevent damage. In such a case, safely park the vehicle, turn off the wiper system, and wait approximately 10 minutes for the system to reset.

  Once reset, normal operation will resume.

• To maintain optimal performance, regularly clean both the windshield and wiper blades using washer fluid. This helps prevent streaking and removes contaminants such as road salt, dust, and residue.
• Accumulation of grease, wax, insects, or other debris on the windshield of the Subaru Ascent may cause uneven wiping or streaks. If this occurs, clean the glass using a soft cloth or sponge with a mild detergent or non-abrasive cleaner.

  Do not use such cleaners on the blade rubber itself. Instead, clean the rubber gently using only water and a soft cloth. Excessive force during cleaning may damage the protective coating and reduce performance.

• After cleaning, rinse both the windshield and blade rubbers thoroughly with clean water. A properly cleaned windshield will allow water to spread evenly without forming droplets.
• If streaking persists even after cleaning, it is recommended to replace the wiper blade rubbers with new ones to ensure clear visibility.

The Subaru Ascent wiper and washer system is designed to maintain optimal visibility in all weather conditions, but proper maintenance and careful operation are essential to ensure long-term reliability and safe driving.

For Subaru Ascent models equipped with automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers, the system is designed to enhance driving comfort and visibility by automatically responding to changing weather conditions while maintaining optimal performance.

• When the wiper control is switched to the "AUTO" mode while the ignition of the Subaru Ascent is in the "ON" position, the wipers will perform a single sweep. This brief activation confirms that the automatic rain-sensing function is enabled and ready for operation.
• When operating your Subaru Ascent with the wiper switch in the "AUTO" position, several behaviors may occur depending on environmental and sensor conditions.
  • The windshield wipers may activate even in the absence of rain if the rain sensor area or windshield surface is disturbed. Vibrations, accumulated dirt, insects, mud, or other contaminants on the glass may trigger unintended operation.

    To prevent unnecessary wear or distraction, it is recommended to disable the AUTO mode unless actual precipitation such as rain or snow is present.

  • The automatic system may fail to activate if the rain sensor does not detect sufficient moisture. In such situations, drivers of the Subaru Ascent should manually adjust the wiper lever to either low-speed or high-speed settings to maintain clear visibility.
  • The efficiency of the rain sensor can be reduced if the upper section of the windshield is affected by water-repellent coatings, dirt buildup, ice formation, or residue. These conditions may prevent accurate detection of raindrop intensity and lead to irregular wiper performance.
  • If the intermittent wiping frequency does not adjust in response to changing rainfall levels, this may indicate a malfunction of the rain sensor system in your Subaru Ascent. In such cases, switch the wipers out of AUTO mode and seek professional inspection at an authorized SUBARU dealer as soon as possible.
  • The wiper system may temporarily stop functioning when ambient temperatures drop to approximately 5°F (−15°C) or below. Normal operation will resume automatically once the temperature rises to about 14°F (−10°C) or higher.

    If it becomes necessary to operate the wipers under extremely cold conditions, manually engage the low or high-speed settings using the wiper control lever in your Subaru Ascent.

  • At very high temperatures, particularly when the area around the rain sensor exceeds approximately 176°F (80°C), the system may be unable to accurately detect rainfall. This can lead to delayed or absent wiper activation.
• The Subaru Ascent is also equipped with a speed-sensitive intermittent wiper function. When the vehicle comes to a stop, the interval between wipes automatically increases, while at higher speeds, the system shortens the interval to ensure optimal windshield clarity during driving.
• In environments with strong electromagnetic interference, such as areas with powerful radio signals or electrical noise, the rain-sensing system in the Subaru Ascent may not function as intended and could exhibit irregular behavior.
• If the wiper switch remains in the "AUTO" position but the wipers fail to activate during rainfall, or if they do not operate even in the "Low speed" setting, switch immediately to the "High speed" mode.

  This situation indicates a possible system fault, and it is strongly recommended to contact an authorized SUBARU dealer to inspect and service the Subaru Ascent wiper system without delay.
