Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Seatbelt warning light and chime
The Subaru Ascent is equipped with an advanced seatbelt reminder system for both
the driver and front passenger seats, fully compliant with modern safety regulations
and designed to enhance occupant protection.
Driver's and front passenger's seats
When the ignition switch of the Subaru Ascent is turned to the "ON" position,
the system actively reminds the driver and front passenger to fasten their seatbelts.
This is achieved through illuminated warning indicators in the positions shown below,
combined with an audible chime for increased awareness.

Operation
Upon switching the ignition to the "ON" position in the Subaru Ascent, the seatbelt
warning indicators for the driver and/or front passenger will illuminate and then
flash for several seconds. If the driver’s seatbelt remains unfastened, an initial
audible alert may sound.
NOTE
- If the seatbelt for the driver and/or front passenger in the Subaru
Ascent is not fastened while the vehicle is in motion, the warning system operates
progressively based on vehicle speed as follows.
- The warning light remains steadily illuminated when driving at approximately
4 mph (6 km/h) or below.
- The warning light begins blinking, and an intermittent chime sounds
when driving between approximately 4 mph (6 km/h) and 13 mph (20 km/h).
The chime will stop once the vehicle comes to a halt.
- If approximately 15 seconds pass while driving within this speed
range, the warning light continues blinking and the audible alert becomes
louder and more persistent.
- At speeds exceeding approximately 13 mph (20 km/h), the warning
light will blink continuously and the warning chime will sound more intensely
to alert occupants.
- Once the seatbelt is securely fastened, the warning light will turn
off and the audible alert will cease immediately.
If the front passenger seat in the Subaru Ascent is unoccupied, the seatbelt
warning system for that seat will automatically deactivate. The system uses occupancy
detection to determine whether a passenger is present and adjusts its operation
accordingly.
CAUTION
Always follow the precautions listed below to ensure proper functionality
of the Subaru Ascent seatbelt warning system.
Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in incorrect system operation
or complete malfunction.
- Do not install accessories such as tables, monitors, or other attachments
on the seatback.
- Avoid placing heavy items in the seatback pocket, as this may interfere
with sensor accuracy.
- Do not allow rear seat passengers to place their hands or legs on the
front passenger seatback or pull on it.
- Ensure that the front seats in the Subaru Ascent are properly locked
in position, both in forward-backward adjustment and seatback angle. If not
securely locked, reposition them correctly.
If the front passenger seatbelt warning system in your Subaru Ascent does not
operate as expected (for example, activating when the seat is empty or failing to
activate when a passenger is present without a fastened seatbelt), take the following
steps.
- Make sure no objects are placed on the front passenger seat other than a
properly installed child restraint system and its occupant. However, it is strongly
recommended that all children travel in the rear seats using appropriate restraints.
- Verify that no items are stored in the seatback pocket that could interfere
with the system.
- Check that the seat position and seatback of the front passenger seat are
securely locked by moving the seat forward and backward.
Additional note: The Subaru Ascent seatbelt warning system plays a critical
role in passenger safety, and consistent use of seatbelts significantly reduces
the risk of injury in the event of a collision.
If the Subaru Ascent front passenger seatbelt warning system continues to operate
incorrectly even after performing all recommended corrective steps, you should immediately
contact an authorized SUBARU dealer for a thorough inspection and professional diagnosis.

The arrangement of the rear seatbelt warning indicators in the Subaru Ascent
is illustrated above. When any rear passenger seatbelt is not fastened, the corresponding
warning light will illuminate or blink to alert the driver.
WARNING
- The driver of the Subaru Ascent must always verify that all passengers
are properly wearing their seatbelts, as the seatbelt detection system may not
accurately recognize occupants under certain conditions.
- When cushions, booster seats, or child restraint systems are used
- When a child or a smaller adult is seated in the rear seat
- Follow these precautions to maintain proper operation of the Subaru Ascent
rear seatbelt warning system.
- Avoid applying strong force or impact to the rear seats.
- Do not fold the seatback forward while objects are placed on the
seat.
- Prevent liquids from spilling onto the rear seats; if spills occur,
clean them immediately.
- Do not attempt to remove or disassemble the rear seats.
NOTE
- The Subaru Ascent rear seatbelt warning system detects seat occupancy.
Placing heavy cargo or large pets on the rear seats may trigger the warning
light and chime. To avoid unnecessary alerts, fasten the rear seatbelt before
placing cargo or transporting large pets.
- Before folding the second- or third-row seats in the Subaru Ascent,
always ensure that the seats are completely empty. Objects trapped between the
seat cushion and seatback may cause damage or activate the warning system unintentionally.
Operation
When the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position in the Subaru Ascent,
any unfastened rear seatbelt will trigger the corresponding warning light to illuminate
or blink, clearly indicating which seatbelt requires attention.
NOTE
- If rear passengers in the Subaru Ascent do not fasten their seatbelts
while the vehicle is moving, the warning system will respond according to vehicle
speed as follows.
- The warning light remains illuminated when driving at approximately
4 mph (6 km/h) or below.
- At speeds between approximately 4 mph (6 km/h) and 13 mph (20 km/h),
if the seatbelt remains unfastened for 50 seconds, the warning light will
begin blinking and an audible alert will sound.
The warning chime will initially sound softly for about 15 seconds,
then increase in volume and continue for an additional 35 seconds. During
this time, the warning light will blink for 50 seconds before remaining
steadily illuminated while the chime stops.
- When driving above approximately 13 mph (20 km/h), if the seatbelt
remains unfastened for 35 seconds, the warning lights corresponding to unfastened
seatbelts will blink and a louder chime will sound. After 35 seconds, the
blinking light will remain steadily illuminated while the chime stops. The
warning light will stay on until the seatbelt is properly fastened.
- Once the rear seatbelt is securely fastened in the Subaru Ascent, the
warning light will turn off and the chime will cease immediately.
Additional note: The Subaru Ascent rear seatbelt monitoring system enhances
passenger safety by providing clear visual and audible reminders, helping ensure
that all occupants are properly secured before and during every journey.
