Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Engine overheating

WARNING

Never remove the radiator cap of your Subaru Ascent until the engine has been completely switched off and allowed to cool down fully. When the engine is hot, the cooling system remains under high pressure.

Opening the cap prematurely may cause a sudden release of pressurized, boiling coolant, which can result in severe burns and serious injury.

CAUTION

If your Subaru Ascent engine begins to overheat, the vehicle may automatically limit engine output or reduce speed to protect critical components. In such a situation, stop the vehicle immediately in a safe location.

If steam is coming from the engine compartment

If no steam is coming from the engine compartment

1. Allow the engine of your Subaru Ascent to continue running at idle speed to help dissipate heat gradually.

2. Carefully open the engine hood to improve airflow and ventilation within the engine bay. Refer to the "Engine hood" section for proper operation.

Verify that the cooling fan is functioning correctly.

If the fan does not operate, immediately shut off the engine and contact an authorized SUBARU dealer, as this indicates a potential cooling system failure.

3. Once the engine coolant temperature begins to decrease, turn off the engine. If the temperature gauge remains in the overheating zone, shut down the engine without delay.

4. After the engine has completely cooled, inspect the coolant level in the reserve tank. If the level is below the "LOW" mark, refill it to the "FULL" level using the appropriate coolant recommended for your Subaru Ascent.

NOTE

For detailed instructions on checking and refilling coolant, refer to the "Engine coolant" section in your Subaru Ascent manual.

5. If the reserve tank is empty, refill it with coolant first.

Then carefully remove the radiator cap and fill the radiator itself.

If removal of the radiator cap is necessary, wrap a thick cloth around it and slowly turn it counterclockwise without applying downward pressure. This allows pressure to release gradually. After pressure is fully relieved, press down and remove the cap completely.
