Vehicle placard
The cargo capacity of the Subaru Ascent is determined by weight rather than available space. The maximum permissible load is indicated on the vehicle placard located on the driver’s side door pillar.
This value includes the combined weight of the driver, passengers, cargo, optional equipment such as roof racks or towing accessories, and the trailer tongue load if applicable. Because these variables change, the actual Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of your Subaru Ascent may vary depending on usage conditions.
GVWR and GAWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Axle Weight Rating)

Certification label
The certification label located at the lower section of the driver’s side door pillar displays the GVWR and GAWR values for the Subaru Ascent.
The total vehicle weight (GVW) must never exceed the GVWR. GVW includes the weight of the vehicle itself, fuel, occupants, cargo, accessories, and trailer tongue load. The GVWR represents the maximum allowable combined weight based on design limitations.
Additionally, the load applied to each axle (GAW) must remain within the specified GAWR limits. Proper load distribution within the Subaru Ascent is essential to maintain balanced handling and safe operation.
Even if the total cargo weight is within limits, improper distribution may overload either the front or rear axle. Whenever possible, distribute weight evenly throughout the vehicle.
If transporting heavy loads in the Subaru Ascent, it is advisable to verify GVW and axle loads using a certified vehicle scale, such as those available at commercial weighing stations.
Using replacement tires with a lower load rating than specified can reduce the allowable GVWR and GAWR limits. Conversely, higher-rated tires do not increase these limits.
Roof rails

The Subaru Ascent allows roof-mounted cargo when equipped with appropriate crossbars and carrying accessories. Always follow manufacturer instructions when installing roof equipment.
The roof system is designed to support a maximum combined load (cargo, crossbars, and accessories) of 176 lbs (80 kg). This limit must never be exceeded, and total vehicle weight must remain within GVWR and GAWR specifications.
CAUTION
NOTE
Adding cargo to the roof of the Subaru Ascent raises the center of gravity, which can affect handling and stability.
Drive carefully when carrying roof loads. Avoid sudden acceleration, aggressive cornering, and abrupt braking. Be especially cautious in strong crosswinds, as their effect on vehicle stability will be increased.
Additional note: Proper loading of the Subaru Ascent not only improves safety but also enhances driving stability and efficiency. Balanced weight distribution and secure cargo placement are key factors in maintaining optimal performance during everyday driving and long-distance travel.
