Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Trailer towing tips
CAUTION
- On Subaru Ascent models equipped with BSD (Blind Spot Detection) and
RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert), it is recommended to deactivate the "Rear Vehicle
Detection (BSD/RCTA)" function when towing a trailer. The presence of the trailer
may interfere with radar signals, reducing system accuracy. For instructions,
refer to the "Car settings" menu.
- If your Subaru Ascent is equipped with the Reverse Automatic Braking
(RAB) system, consult your SUBARU dealer before towing, as additional considerations
may apply.
- Operating the Subaru Ascent with a trailer in hot weather or on extended
uphill routes may increase the risk of engine or transmission overheating.
- When towing, the Subaru Ascent will respond differently compared to normal
driving conditions. Steering precision, braking efficiency, and stopping distances
are all affected. Always drive conservatively and avoid excessive speeds. Follow
the guidelines below for safe towing.
- When parking on steep inclines with a trailer attached to the Subaru
Ascent, be aware that the electronic parking brake alone may not provide sufficient
holding force. Additional precautions should be taken.
Before starting out on a trip
- Review all applicable towing laws and regulations for your region before
operating the Subaru Ascent with a trailer. Non-compliance may result in legal
penalties and insurance complications.
- Inspect the Subaru Ascent and all hitch components thoroughly. If any defects
or abnormalities are found, do not proceed with towing.
- Ensure that the vehicle maintains a level stance when the trailer is attached.
If the Subaru Ascent appears excessively tilted, re-evaluate trailer weight,
tongue load, and load distribution.
- Verify that tire specifications and pressures for both the Subaru Ascent
and the trailer meet recommended values.
- Confirm that all connections are secure:
- The trailer coupler is firmly attached to the hitch ball.
- The trailer electrical connector is properly installed, and all lighting
functions (brake lights and turn signals) operate correctly.
- Safety chains are securely fastened.
- All cargo within the trailer is tightly secured.
- The side mirrors provide sufficient rearward visibility without excessive
blind spots.
- Before embarking on a long journey, practice maneuvering the Subaru Ascent
with the trailer in a safe, open area. Familiarize yourself with braking, turning,
and reversing characteristics.
Driving with a trailer
- When towing with the Subaru Ascent, always allow a significantly longer
stopping distance.
Avoid sudden braking, as it may cause trailer sway, skidding, or jackknifing.
- Steer smoothly and avoid abrupt turns or sudden lane changes.
- Reduce speed before entering turns. Due to the trailer tracking closer to
the inside of the turn, a wider turning radius is necessary to avoid contact
with obstacles or the vehicle itself.
- Be mindful of crosswinds, which can destabilize the Subaru Ascent and trailer
combination. Strong gusts from weather conditions or passing large vehicles
may cause sway. If this occurs, hold the steering wheel firmly and gradually
reduce speed.
- Allow additional space when overtaking other vehicles, as the combined length
and weight of the Subaru Ascent and trailer require more distance.
- Reversing with a trailer requires skill and patience.
Avoid rapid acceleration or steering inputs, and control the steering wheel
carefully—preferably from the bottom position—to maintain precision.

To reverse around a corner, follow these steps carefully.
1. Begin reversing slowly and turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction
of the intended trailer movement.
2. Once the trailer starts pivoting, straighten the steering wheel to stabilize
alignment.
3. Then steer in the opposite direction to guide the trailer’s trajectory.
4. Continue adjusting until the Subaru Ascent and trailer are aligned, then center
the steering wheel.
- If the ABS warning light activates while towing, stop immediately and have
the Subaru Ascent inspected by a qualified SUBARU dealer before continuing.
Driving on grades
- Before descending steep slopes, reduce speed and shift into a lower gear
to utilize engine braking. This helps prevent excessive brake wear and overheating.
Avoid abrupt downshifting.
- During uphill driving in hot weather, the air conditioning system of the
Subaru Ascent may temporarily deactivate to protect engine components from overheating.
- Monitor critical indicators when climbing inclines, especially in high temperatures,
as both engine and transmission are under increased load.
Temperature gauge
AT OIL TEMP warning light
Rear differential oil temperature warning light (if equipped)
If any of the following warning signs appear, immediately switch off the air
conditioner and safely stop the Subaru Ascent at the nearest suitable location.
Refer to the appropriate emergency procedures.
- "If you park your vehicle in case of an emergency"
- "Engine overheating"
- The temperature gauge approaching the overheating zone
- Illumination of the AT OIL TEMP warning light
- Activation of the rear differential oil temperature warning light (if
equipped)
- Do not use the accelerator to hold the Subaru Ascent stationary on an incline.
Instead, apply the foot brake or parking brake to prevent overheating of transmission
components.
Parking on a grade
When parking the Subaru Ascent with a trailer, always secure both the vehicle
and trailer wheels using wheel chocks. Firmly engage the parking brake. Avoid parking
on slopes whenever possible.
If parking on an incline is unavoidable, follow this procedure:
1. Keep the brake pedal fully depressed.
2. Have another person position wheel chocks under both the Subaru Ascent and
trailer wheels.
3. Slowly release the brake pedal until the vehicle weight is supported by the
chocks.
4. Reapply the brakes, engage the parking brake, then gradually release the foot
brake.
5. Shift the transmission into the "P" position and turn off the engine.
Additional note: Careful preparation and disciplined driving habits are essential
when towing with the Subaru Ascent. Following these recommendations enhances safety,
improves handling stability, and helps protect both the vehicle and trailer from
unnecessary stress.
WARNING
Under no circumstances should you drill into the frame or underbody of your
Subaru Ascent to install an aftermarket or commercial trailer hitch.
