Subaru Ascent 2018-2026 Owner's Manual: Engine exhaust gas (carbon monoxide)

WARNING

• Never inhale exhaust fumes from your Subaru Ascent.

  Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide, an invisible and odorless gas that can cause serious injury or death if inhaled.

• Regularly inspect and maintain the exhaust system to prevent gases from entering the cabin.
• Never run the engine in enclosed areas such as garages, except briefly when moving the Subaru Ascent in or out.
• Avoid remaining inside a parked vehicle with the engine running for long periods. If unavoidable, ensure proper ventilation by using the blower system.
• Keep the ventilation intake area free from snow, debris, and leaves to ensure proper airflow.
• If you suspect exhaust fumes inside the Subaru Ascent, have the vehicle inspected immediately. If driving is necessary, keep all windows fully open.
• Always ensure the rear gate is securely closed while driving to prevent exhaust gases from entering the cabin.

NOTE

After shutting off the engine in the Subaru Ascent, you may hear a brief crackling sound from the exhaust system. This is a normal result of metal components expanding and contracting as they cool down.
