The spare tire in the Subaru Ascent is positioned in a dedicated holder beneath the cargo compartment, utilizing a hoist mechanism that allows for easy lowering and raising.
This holder is specifically engineered to accommodate only the designated temporary spare tire or, in emergency situations, a full-size flat tire.
A full-size tire should only be stored temporarily in this location during emergencies. Once repaired, it should be replaced with the proper spare tire configuration.
Before using the temporary spare tire, carefully review the section titled "Temporary spare tire" for important safety guidelines.
Removing the spare tire
1. Retrieve the wheel nut wrench, screwdriver, and extensions from the tool storage compartment.

2. Remove the subfloor storage lid from the cargo area.
3. Take out the jack.

4. Use a screwdriver to open the central cover located on the luggage floor.

5. Remove the rubber protective cap.

6. Attach the two extensions to the hoist shaft.

7. Fit the wheel nut wrench onto the extension assembly.
8. Rotate the hoist shaft counterclockwise using the wrench until the cable is fully extended and the spare tire lowers completely.
CAUTION

9. Carefully tilt the spare tire upward and remove the retaining bracket as illustrated.
10. After removing the tire from the cable, rewind the cable completely by turning the hoist shaft clockwise until a clicking sound is heard. Confirm visually that no slack remains in the cable.

WARNING
Never store a non-flat full-size tire in the holder, as it may cause damage or compromise safety.
CAUTION
Do not use power tools when operating the hoist mechanism, as this may cause serious mechanical damage.
Re-storage of spare tire
1. Rotate the hoist shaft counterclockwise until the cable slack is sufficient for inserting the retainer through the tire’s center hole.

2. Insert the retainer through the center opening of the spare tire.

3. Tighten the hoist shaft clockwise until the cable is fully secured and audible clicks confirm proper engagement. Verify by gently shaking the tire.
CAUTION
If the spare tire is not properly secured, it may shift, causing noise or damage to nearby components of the Subaru Ascent.
4. Reinstall the rubber cap.
5. Close the access cover.
6. Return all tools (wrench, extensions, jack, handle) to their designated storage locations.
7. Reinstall the cargo floor lid.
CAUTION
Additional note: Proper handling and storage of the spare tire in your Subaru Ascent ensures reliability during emergencies and prevents unnecessary damage to underbody systems, contributing to safer and more efficient vehicle operation.

Treadwear
The treadwear grade is a comparative
rating based on the wear rate of
the tire when tested under controlled
conditions on a specified
government test course.
For example, a tire graded 150
would wear one and one-half (1-
1/2) times as well on the government
course as a tire graded 100.
